Young people across Essex, Kent & Medway are facing a mental health landscape that is becoming increasingly difficult to navigate. Recent analysis from the University of Essex, Mind the Gap – The Inequalities of Youth Mental Health, highlights something we witness every day in our work: communities are struggling to support their youngest residents.

The data is stark — but it also reinforces why community‑led, relational, nature‑based support like ours is not just helpful, but essential.

A Region Under Pressure: Essex, Kent & Medway

Essex

Greater Essex is experiencing deepening inequalities:

  • Only 40% of residents describe their health as “very good”.

  • Fewer than 40% of households are free from any deprivation measure.

  • Tendring ranks among the top 25 local authorities for suicide rates.

  • Essex’s rate of hospital admissions for self‑harm (10–24) is above the national average.

  • 1 in 6 young people aged 5–16 have a diagnosable mental health condition — identical to Kent.

Kent & Medway

Kent mirrors Essex almost exactly:

  • 1 in 6 young people aged 5–16 have a diagnosable mental health condition.

  • Hospital admissions for self‑harm among 10–24‑year‑olds are higher than the England average.

  • Thanet is in the top 10% most deprived areas nationally.

  • Swale and Gravesham contain neighbourhoods in the top 20% most deprived.

  • Medway shows rising youth mental health referrals and significant early‑help gaps.

These aren’t just numbers. They’re the lived realities behind the young people who arrive at our sessions feeling overwhelmed, isolated, or unsure where to turn next.

Isolation & Loneliness: A Hidden Crisis

The report draws an important distinction:

  • Social isolation — not having meaningful contact

  • Loneliness — feeling disconnected even when contact exists

Essex

  • 10% of young adults feel lonely “often or always”.

Kent

  • 11% of young people feel lonely “often or always”.

Loneliness is highest among young people experiencing:

  • Poverty

  • Neurodiversity

  • School exclusion

  • Family conflict

This is why our nature‑based model matters. Angling creates a calm, pressure‑free environment where young people can:

  • Build confidence

  • Form real connections

  • Develop trust at their own pace

  • Experience quiet moments away from chaos

It’s not therapy — but it is therapeutic.

🎣 Early Intervention: A Shared Regional Challenge

Across Essex, Kent & Medway:

  • 80% of mental health disorders begin in youth

  • CAMHS waiting lists remain long

  • Specialist thresholds are high

  • Referrals to CYPMHS continue to rise

This is exactly why Cast A Thought’s model is so impactful across the region.

We contribute to early intervention by:

  • Reducing isolation

  • Building resilience

  • Providing predictable, safe environments

  • Offering progression routes like Young Leaders

  • Strengthening protective factors such as belonging and trust

These aren’t abstract ideas. They’re the foundations of every session we run.

How Cast A Thought Is Closing the Gap

1. Tackling Isolation Through Nature

Our angling and outdoor wellbeing sessions give young people a calm, welcoming space to connect with peers and trusted adults.

2. Working Where Need Is Highest

We operate in the exact communities highlighted in the data — areas of deprivation, and high‑need areas.

3. Building Trusted Relationships

Consistency is everything. Our trauma‑informed, safeguarding‑led approach helps young people rebuild trust in adults and in themselves.

4. Removing Barriers

We provide:

  • Equipment

  • Meals

  • Free access to sessions

These practical steps make support accessible to young people who would otherwise be excluded.

5. Embedding Youth Voice

Our sessions are co‑designed with young people. Their ideas shape our programmes, our progression routes, and our future plans.

The Mind the Gap findings aren’t just a warning — they’re a call to action.

Young people in Essex, Kent & Medway are facing rising mental health challenges, but they’re also showing incredible resilience. With the right support, the right environment, and the right relationships, they can thrive.
