At Cast A Thought, everything we do is shaped by lived experience. It’s not just something we talk about—it’s something we actively build into every part of our organisation, from leadership right through to the people delivering sessions on the bank.
What makes Cast A Thought different is the people behind it. Our directors, community development leaders, coaches, volunteers, and young leaders all bring their own personal journeys into the work we do. Many have faced challenges with mental health, education, social isolation, or navigating life as a neurodiverse individual. Because of this, they understand—genuinely and deeply—what the people we support may be going through.
That understanding changes everything.
It shapes how we communicate, how we plan sessions, and how we create safe, welcoming environments where people feel seen and valued. There’s no judgement, no pressure—just people supporting people, often because they’ve been in similar situations themselves.
For participants, this creates an immediate sense of connection. Whether it’s a young person struggling in school, someone dealing with anxiety, or an adult looking for a positive outlet, they’re not being supported by someone who’s simply trained—they’re being supported by someone who “gets it.”
This approach sits at the heart of our vision: to use angling as a tool to improve lives, build confidence, and create meaningful opportunities for people of all backgrounds. Lived experience allows us to deliver that vision in a way that feels real, relatable, and impactful.
It also plays a key role in our mission to develop pathways. We don’t just support individuals—we create opportunities for them to grow within Cast A Thought. Many of our volunteers and young leaders started out as participants. Over time, they’ve built confidence, gained skills, and stepped into roles where they now support others.
That journey—from participant to leader—is one of the most powerful examples of lived experience in action.
It shows that positive change is possible. It shows that people can move forward, build resilience, and give back. And perhaps most importantly, it shows others that they’re not alone.
For our wider community, this approach reinforces trust. Parents, partners, and supporters can see that what we offer isn’t generic—it’s personal, thoughtful, and built on real understanding. It demonstrates a genuine commitment to improving lives, not just delivering programmes.
At its core, Cast A Thought is about people. Lived experience ensures that everything we do stays grounded in empathy, authenticity, and connection.
And that’s what makes the difference.
