We are excited to share that we are broadening our Mental Health and Wellbeing initiatives in West Essex, made possible by funding from the Active Essex Foundation and Uttlesford District Council.

So what is Catch and Connect?

This is a 20-week wellbeing program tailored for individuals aged 11 to 17. Each week, we will explore a different aspect of mental wellbeing. The learning process will involve discussion and reflection during fishing activities to boost social, personal, and emotional growth.

Subjects to be addressed:

  • Overview of mental health and wellbeing.

  • The science behind wellbeing.

  • My changing brain.

  • Identifying personal strengths and how to apply them.

  • Strategies to handle anxiety and stress.

  • Techniques to reframe negative thinking.

  • The impact of sleep and screentime on mood.

  • The effect of social media on self worth.

  • Setting and achieving personal goals.

  • Identifying and managing emotions.

  • Turning failures into success.

  • Conflict and repair.

  • Talking about mental health.

  • Helping others for better mental health

  • Making change happen.

Why choose us

At Cast A Thought, we offer more than just a fishing program; we provide a safe, supportive environment where young individuals are genuinely seen, heard, and valued.

Our team, led by experienced youth workers, with strong backgrounds in community development and angling, includes Youth Mental Health First Aiders, professionals trained to Level 3 Safeguarding, and a committed network of dedicated volunteers. All are Enhanced DBS-checked and trained in safeguarding, trauma, and the effects of early adversity.

Our Youth-Centred Approach empowers young people to take charge of their own journeys. We support them by focusing on their strengths, goals, and dreams, not just their challenges. We listen, learn, and collaborate with them, rather than acting on their behalf.

Whether it’s finding peace by the water’s edge, setting life goals, or simply having a trusted adult to talk to, our Catch and Connect program offers a consistent, respectful presence.

This is not a one-time experience; it’s an ongoing partnership where young people build confidence, develop new skills, and shape a future that is meaningful to them.
